Farmer Outreach

The St. John’s Farmers Market has launched a month-long program to attract more farmers to the market. Program Coordinator Sarah Hansen will be contacting farmers and holding six information sessions throughout the Avalon Peninsula.

“We are looking for vegetable, fruit and meat producers who are willing to travel to our market on Saturdays during the summer and fall,” says Hansen. “Our goal is to continue attracting farmers of all kinds to give consumers as much variety as possible.”

Information sessions will be held for farmers to find out exactly what the market is all about, why it would be beneficial for them to sell their products there, and to get input on how the market can serve them best. Farmers can make up to three times as much money by selling directly to the consumer at venues such as farmers’ markets, according to a study done by Farmers’ Markets Canada in 2008. The same study showed that farmers’ markets were responsible for $3.09 billion worth of revenue in Canada during 2008. The Canadian farmers’ market industry has shown incredible growth over the past ten years.

The St. John’s Farmers’ Market will begin its third season this year. The market is held every Saturday from 9am to 2pm, from June to November, at the Lion’s Chalet on Bonaventure Avenue in St. John’s.
