St. John’s Farmers’ Market Open on Saturday, June 7th

Our 7th season is starting this coming Saturday, June 7th from 9AM-2PM! As in years prior, the Market will be held in the Lion’s Club Chalet off Bonaventure and Mayor Avenue, behind the ReMax Center. The 2014 season will run every Saturday until December 20th, the last Saturday before Christmas.

This year at the market, look for new products among your familiar favourites. Every week, turn to our farmers for locally grown fresh vegetables, fruits, roots, medicinal plants and herbs. Fresh, local eggs and meats are also available, so come early; they run out quickly! Check out our artisans and crafters for baked goods, preserves, literature, photography, jewelry, aromatherapy, body care, sea salt, natural pets treats and much more.

Bring your appetite when you visit as there will be wide variety of delectable hot foods including waffles, pulled pork and fish cakes, as well as the ever-popular multi-cultural cuisines that includes samosas, falafel, jerk chicken and curries.

The Market will be host to many exciting workshops on topics such as food, gardening and cooking, plus activities such as yoga, salsa dancing, and a drum circle. There also will be live music and theatre by local artists.

In addition to performances by musicians Geoff Panting and Perry Muise, this week will feature:

11:15AM-12:00PM: Salsa Dancing with Salsa in St. John’s

12:00PM-1:00PM: Hula-hooping with FarOut Fitness

1:00PM-2:00PM: Yoga with Nova Yoga Studio

More than just a great place to shop, the Market is a community event. It’s a venue where people are able to connect with their community through the products sold, the services offered, and the art and ideas expressed there. The Market offers the opportunity to meet new people and learn new things.

Market Manager Danilo González can testify to the multi-faceted appeal of the Market. “As a foreign guy, I was looking for a place to meet new people and expand my network during my first year in St. John’s; I was looking for a real sense of community”, he says. “When I realized there is a place open every Saturday, putting together amazing local and international food, fresh agricultural products, interesting handmade creations, literature, photography, workshops and group activities, my search was over. St. John’s Farmers Market is a great example of what you can do when you put together people with good ideas, social commitment and motivation. This is not just about food, veggies or a business. This is about connecting with more vibrant faces and learning. Now that I am the manager, I get surprised everyday with exciting new vendors coming and making this Market a place to visit more than once. You will find more than you expect!”

We hope you take advantage of all the Market has to offer this season.

The St. John’s Farmers’ Market is volunteer-run, so if you’re interested in lending a helping hand contact the Market Manager at sjfm.admin@gmail.com. Volunteers receive free coffee and our undying gratitude!
