We’ve reached our fundraising goal!

The St. John’s Farmers’ Market Cooperative’s “Grow Our Space” campaign has received two major contributions: $50,000 from the Aviva Community Fund and $10,000 from the VOCM Cares Foundation.

The St. John’s Farmers’ Market received more than 9500 votes in the voting round of the Aviva Community Fund competition, landing in a close 2nd place in Canada in the “Up to $50,000” category and earning the market a place amongst the 30 finalists. From there, a panel of expert judges looked at each idea’s sustainability, impact, likelihood of success, votes, and originality. Alongside the Farmers’ Market, 14 other ideas from across the country were the recipients of a total of $1 million from the fund.

The VOCM Cares Foundation is a public foundation of Steele Communications, mandated to raise funds for charitable causes involving the health, education and safety of the community at large.

These contributions put the market past its initial $100,000 fundraising goal.

To mark the occasion, there will be a celebration at the Farmers’ Market this Saturday (December 5th). To thank its many supporters, the Market is providing free coffee (brewed from beans provided by market vendor Trinity Coffee Company) and SJFM pins to market-goers. “Momentum is building,” says Joshua Smee, Chair of the Market’s Board of Directors, “This is a big step toward a market facility that will be an incredible asset to the community. We encourage all our supporters to drop down to the Market this weekend to say hi, have a cup of coffee on us, and accept our thanks for helping make this possible.”
