St. John’s Farmers’ Market holding Grand Opening in the new Community Market on July 21st

On Saturday, July 21st, the St. John’s Farmers’ Market will hold its Grand Opening Market and a weekend of celebrations in the new St. John’s Community Market on Freshwater Road.

After more than five years of planning and development and nine months of renovations funded by the City of St. John’s, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, ACOA and the St. John’s Farmers’ Market Cooperative, this city-owned 14,000 square-foot facility is almost ready to be St. John’s first permanent market space.

In mid-June, the St. John’s Farmers’ Market Cooperative will take occupancy of the building, which includes a commercial kitchen, community room, café, dining area, outdoor plaza, and much more. Farmers’ Markets will be held there every Saturday from 9-4 and every Wednesday from 2-8, with the facility serving as a community space and rental venue during the rest of the week.

Visitors can expect a much-improved market experience, with a fully accessible and inclusive building, a larger number of vendors and products, space to sit, and a green dining area that allows all patrons to dine or take away food waste-free. Parking on Saturdays will be ample thanks to a partnership with the Tax Centre next door.

“After years of hard work by our Cooperative and by our partners at the City of St. John’s, ACOA, and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, it is incredible to be circling a date on the calendar,” says Joshua Smee, Chair of the Cooperative’s Board of Directors, “The community response to this project has been amazing, we know St. John’s has been waiting for it, and we can’t wait to open the doors.”

The Grand Opening Market will kick off a weekend of celebrations that will highlight the flexible and creative uses possible for the space. Leading the planning for those celebrations, and leading the operations of the Cooperative, is Executive Director Ann Connors.

“Almost there!! What a thrill it has been to work with this Board and the countless community partners as we prepare to throw open the doors, to imagine what this new community space can be and to envision its future as a critical meeting place for the citizens of St. John’s. Got an idea? We would love to hear from you.  Come break bread with us.”

Market fans don’t have to wait for July 21st for their fix, though. This Saturday, May 19th, is the final Winter Market of the season at the Lions Club Chalet on Bonaventure Avenue. After a week off, the regular market will be back, operating from 9 AM to 2 PM every Saturday from June 2nd through July 14th at the Lions Chalet.

Plans for the Grand Opening Weekend celebration are still cooking, so the public should follow the St. John’s Farmers’ Market on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for all the details. Expect lots of singing, dancing and food that the whole family can enjoy.
