Vendors

Becoming a Vendor

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO VENDORS: Due to overwhelming demand, we are no longer accepting applications for regular bookings from non-farmers for the 2010 season (we are still accepting applications from farmers and primary producers such as eggs/meats/etc). If you wish to apply, you will be placed on our regular bookings waiting list. Thank you for your interest in the St. John’s Farmers’ Market.

To apply please fill out a vendor application form with the date(s) you require. If you are booked for a weekend, you will receive an email on Tuesday evening confirming your table at the following Saturday’s market. You must pay for your table before Saturday, either by PayPal (please add $1 to your table fee), or by snail mail to:

SJFM
3 Long Street
St. John’s, NL
A1C 4B1

Please note: Tables are not guaranteed unless they are paid in advance. Indoor tables are $25, outdoors are $20. Students and seniors get a $5.00 discount on their table.

Vendor Tips

Vendor tips for selling at the market:
  • Provide as much information about your product as possible; where it’s from, ingredients, recipes, alternate uses, what inspired it, your own contact information, etc. Customers will want to know what they’re buying and how to find it off-season if they love it!
  • Display as much of your product as possible so customers see the options you have available.
  • If possible, provide samples, which are a great way to test new market products!
  • If you have a tablecloth or length of fabric that would make your wares stand out more, feel free to bring it along – just make sure no material is dragging on the floor with so many feet moving about!
  • It’s going to be another busy season, and it’ll be tiring being on your feet all day. If you’re working alone, arrange for someone to drop by so you can take a break. We do have volunteers available to watch your table while you use the washroom or refill a water bottle, so flag one of us down as necessary.
  • Know the value of your product and charge accordingly. Take into consideration the cost of ingredients, the time it takes you to create, your overhead (including table rental), and a reasonable profit margin.
  • Whether you’re with us for a day or the season, please make time to get to know some of the other vendors and organizers!
  • Let us know how we’re doing and have a great season!

Rules for Vendors

See St. John’s Farmers’ Market bylaws for full list of rules:
  1. You must confirm your table and pay for it by noon Thursday for Saturday’s market.
  2. Vendors must arrive no later than 8:30 am for setup, and leave no later than 3:00pm after cleaning up their space, as well as any equipment on loan from the SJFM (ie, Chafers, chairs, tables).
  3. Vendors not at their table by 9:00am may have their table allocated to a ‘wait-list’ vendor.
  4. The market opens at 9:00 am, and nothing may be sold before the beginning of the market.
  5. The market closes at 2:00 pm, and all vendors are expected to stay until this time unless you sell out. If you do sell out, please put a sign saying so on your table, and inform the Market Manager that you’ll be leaving early.
  6. Vendors must remove all their own garbage, recycling, etc.
  7. Pets (with the exception of guide animals, etc.) are not permitted at the market for health and safety reasons.
  8. New this year is our “Kids Room”, where volunteers and special guests will tend to and entertain children of attendees. Please note, this is a service for patrons and is not a day care!
  9. The St. John’s Farmers’ Market is a smoke-free environment.
  10. We are able to provide 26 indoor tables and 10 outdoor tables. After that limit is reached, if you’re able to provide your own table we’ll make every effort to accommodate you.

Each Market

Things for vendors to bring to each market:
  1. A float with plenty of change for the day. At least $100 in fives, toonies and loonies is strongly recommended!
  2. Signs for your table.
  3. A tablecloth.
  4. Tape, scissors, markers, and paper for new signs if needed.
  5. Bags for customers. (Paper if possible.)
  6. Business cards, brochures, etc, to promote your product or service.
  7. As many of your products as possible!
